Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these medications need to be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors propose the way of the drugs explains the heightened regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural changes.
